Worn on Skin: The Only Two Glues for Rhinestoning the Body

Worn on Skin: The Only Two Glues for Rhinestoning the Body

Skin is the surface that changes everything.

Every other surface in this series — fabric, glass, metal, plastic, wood — is an object. Skin is a person. That distinction matters more than any other factor when it comes to adhesive selection. The moment rhinestones go on a human body, the entire conversation shifts from bond strength and working time to safety, biocompatibility, and reversibility.

This is not a category where you improvise with what's available. It's not a category where you reach for a craft adhesive and hope for the best. Most of the adhesives in Crystal Ninja's full lineup are not skin-safe. Many would cause irritation, contact dermatitis, or worse if applied to skin and left there.

There are exactly two adhesives on The Crystal Ninja's recommended list for skin: Pros-Aide and KISS Strip Lash Adhesive. Both are specifically formulated for skin contact. Both are tested for safety. Both are designed to be removed without damaging the skin beneath. Nothing else on the full glue chart belongs anywhere near a face, body, or performance artist.

Here's what you need to know about each one.

Pros-Aide

What It Is

Pros-Aide is the leading adhesive used for medical prosthetic applications — the worldwide industry standard for use in the professional medical prosthetic and special effects makeup industries for over 30 years. It is a water-based acrylic adhesive that was developed for the most demanding skin-contact environments imaginable: medical prosthetics, theatrical makeup for film and television, and long-duration performance applications.

Pros-Aide is specifically formulated for sensitive skin and is non-irritating. All Pros-Aide products are water-based and completely safe.

What Makes It Different

Most adhesives bond by chemical reaction with the substrate. Pros-Aide bonds to skin through a contact mechanism — it goes on white, you wait until the adhesive turns clear and tacky, about 20–30 seconds, then set the piece in place. Once the clear, tacky layers make contact and are pressed together, the bond forms immediately and holds with remarkable strength.

When dry, Pros-Aide gives absolute waterproof bonds to all skin surfaces — the kind of adhesion required with medical prosthetic applications and the demanding needs of professional special effects makeup artists.

The non-toxic, water-based acrylic substance lasts exceptionally well under all conditions, even when exposed to water, sweat, and moisture without disturbing skin.

Application

Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back of the piece or gemstone and to the skin surface. Allow to dry until the adhesive turns clear. You may allow the adhesive to dry as long as you like. A second coat on both surfaces strengthens the bond. For rhinestones specifically, apply a small dot to the back of each stone, let it turn clear, then press firmly into position.

The contact method is key: both surfaces need to be dry and tacky before they touch. Once they meet, the bond forms. Repositioning after contact is not possible without an adhesive remover.

Removal

Pros-Aide will normally stay on until it's taken off with 99% alcohol and/or isopropyl myristate or one of the other adhesive removers. Never pull rhinestones off bare skin by force — always dissolve the adhesive first. This is especially important for delicate areas like the face, neck, and décolletage where aggressive removal can cause skin trauma.

Wear Time

Pros-Aide is a professional-grade adhesive. When properly applied, it can hold through a full performance, an event day, and even extended wear — the bond is limited not by the adhesive's strength but by the skin's own natural processes: oil production, sweat, and natural skin shedding. Under normal conditions, a properly applied Pros-Aide bond can last many hours. In high-sweat, high-activity environments, expect closer to 6–12 hours before reapplication may be needed.

Important Notes

Pros-Aide is non-toxic and safe for all skin types, although areas such as the neck, back, and chest can be more sensitive and should be handled with extra care.

This product will solidify if it freezes, limiting shipping options in winter. Store properly.

Always patch test before full application — while Pros-Aide is formulated for sensitive skin, individual skin reactions vary.

Best for: festival and performance rhinestone looks, editorial and theatrical body embellishment, face and body gem application for events and competitions, any skin rhinestone application requiring a professional-grade, long-duration, waterproof bond.

KISS Strip Lash Adhesive

What It Is

KISS Strip Lash Adhesive was designed for false eyelash application — one of the most sensitive skin-contact zones on the entire body. What makes it work for rhinestones is exactly what makes it work for lashes: 24-hour flexible hold, odor free, latex free, and waterproof, suitable for contact lens wearers.

The strip lash adhesive with aloe is hypoallergenic, odorless, latex and formaldehyde-free, and dries clear for invisible, effortless wear.

It's an accessible, widely available skin-safe adhesive that the rhinestone community has adopted well beyond its original lash application — and it performs.

What Makes It Different

Where Pros-Aide is a professional-grade contact adhesive with a two-surface application method, KISS Strip Lash is a simpler, single-application adhesive. You apply it to the back of the rhinestone or directly to the skin, wait 30 seconds for it to get tacky, then position and hold. It dries clear, leaves no visible residue, and releases cleanly with standard makeup remover.

Generally, embellishments should last about 8 hours on the skin, though it depends on how heavy they are and whether you are dancing or making a lot of movements while wearing them.

It's a lighter-duty adhesive than Pros-Aide — which is actually a feature for casual or everyday skin rhinestone use where you want the stones to come off easily at the end of the night without adhesive remover.

Application

Wait about 20 to 30 seconds for the adhesive to get tacky before adhering gems to your face. You can either apply the adhesive directly onto the gem or to your skin — it won't make a difference in longevity. For the most precise placement, apply a dot of glue to the rhinestone's back, let it get tacky, then use tweezers to position it exactly where you want it.

Removal

Use makeup remover to wipe away excess glue. A micellar water or oil-based makeup remover dissolves the adhesive gently without tugging at the skin. Never peel rhinestones off bare skin dry — always use remover first.

Important Notes

KISS Strip Lash Adhesive is designed for lash-line and face use. For body locations — torso, arms, back, legs — the adhesive may not hold as long due to differences in skin texture, oil production, and movement. Test in a hidden area first for any longer-duration body application.

The aloe and skin-soothing formula makes it comfortable for extended facial wear, but individual sensitivity varies. Patch test before full application.

Best for: everyday and event face rhinestone looks, festival glam, beginner skin rhinestone application, any skin application where easy removal at day's end matters as much as hold strength.

Choosing the Right One

Two adhesives, one surface — the choice is simpler than any other surface in this series:

Professional performance, long-duration, high-sweat environment? Pros-Aide. It's the medical and theatrical industry standard for a reason.

Casual event, everyday glam, easy removal at the end of the night? KISS Strip Lash Adhesive. Accessible, reliable, and remover-friendly.

New to skin rhinestones? Start with KISS Strip Lash. Learn the application technique — tacky-before-placement, light pressure, patience — then move to Pros-Aide when the performance stakes demand it.

Working near the eyes? Both are formulated with eye-area safety in mind. KISS is specifically rated for contact lens wearers. Pros-Aide is a medical-grade formula. Neither should make direct eye contact — but both are among the safest options if accidental contact occurs.

Set Time & Wear Time: What to Expect

Skin adhesives don't work the same way surface adhesives do. There is no "cure time" in the traditional sense — the bond is formed when tacky surfaces meet, and wear time is the relevant metric rather than cure time.

Glue Tacky / Ready to Place Wear Time Removal
Pros-Aide 20–30 seconds to turn clear and tacky 6–12+ hours; through sweat and water 99% isopropyl alcohol or dedicated adhesive remover
KISS Strip Lash 30 seconds to tacky Up to 24 hours on lash line; ~8 hours for face gems Makeup remover or micellar water

What the table makes clear:

Pros-Aide holds longer and stronger, especially under sweat and active movement — which is why it's the professional standard for performers and stage artists. Its removal requires a dedicated solvent, not just makeup remover.

KISS Strip Lash is the more accessible option, with gentler hold and easier removal. The trade-off is durability under extreme conditions — high sweat, heavy activity, and extended wear will challenge it more than Pros-Aide.

Neither adhesive is permanent. Both are designed to be removed at the end of the wear period. If rhinestones feel like they're lifting before you're ready, a small dot of fresh adhesive can be applied to reactivate the bond — this works especially well with KISS Strip Lash.

A Few Things That Apply to Both

Skin must be clean and dry before any adhesive goes on. Moisturizer, sunscreen, skin oil, and sweat are the enemies of adhesion on skin. Wipe the application area with a clean tissue or cotton pad to remove any product, then let the skin dry completely before applying adhesive.

Less is more on skin. A thin, even dot of adhesive behind a rhinestone is all you need — excess adhesive spreads out from under the stone when pressure is applied, looks messy, and doesn't increase hold.

Always let the adhesive get tacky before placement. This is the step most beginners skip, and it's the most important one. Wet adhesive on skin does not bond — it slides. Tacky adhesive creates an instant, secure connection when it meets another tacky surface or skin.

Never pull rhinestones off skin without remover. Dry removal pulls at the upper layers of skin — it hurts, and over time it can cause irritation, redness, or damage. Always dissolve the adhesive first.

Patch test before any large or facial application. Both Pros-Aide and KISS are formulated for sensitive skin, but individual reactions vary. Apply a small amount to the inner wrist or behind the ear, leave for 24 hours, and check for any redness or irritation before a full application.

Avoid broken, sunburned, or irritated skin. Neither adhesive should be applied to compromised skin. Wait until the skin has fully healed before any rhinestone application in that area.

A Word on Safety

Skin is the only surface in this entire series where the question isn't just "will it hold?" — it's "is it safe?" Every other adhesive in Crystal Ninja's lineup is formulated for materials, not people. Craft adhesives, cyanoacrylates, epoxies, and industrial adhesives can cause serious skin reactions, chemical burns, or require medical attention to remove if applied to skin and left there.

If an adhesive doesn't specifically say it's skin-safe, formulated for skin contact, and tested for dermatological safety — it doesn't belong on a body. Full stop.

Pros-Aide and KISS Strip Lash Adhesive are on Crystal Ninja's list precisely because they've earned the right to be there. They were built for skin. Everything else on the chart was not.

Final Word

Body rhinestone application is one of the most visible, most personal, and most artistically expressive forms of crystal work. A face covered in precisely placed stones, catching the light at a festival or under a stage spotlight, is genuinely striking — and it deserves an adhesive that was built for the task.

Use what was made for skin. Respect the surface. Take care with removal.

Then wear every stone like it belongs there — because with the right adhesive, it does.
